How Smileloc Works
Smileloc has 8 arms – 4 inner arms that engage an abutment undercut, and 4 outer arms that engage a coping undercut that the restoration is affixed to.
Prostheses are quickly and easily removed through the targeted application of heat onto the Smileloc sleeve with the Smilekey wand. The heat activates the nitinol shape memory returning all 8 arms to a non-engaging, unlocked state.
To return the prostheses, the Smileloc arms are simply ‘reset' to an engaging position or replaced, and the prostheses is clicked into place.

How is a Smileloc dental prosthesis removed?
Smileloc prostheses can easily be removed from the mouth with Smilekey. Smilekey is an induction device that emits targeted energy and activates the Smileloc's unlocked position. This unlocked position enables easy removal of the dental prosthesis.
How long does it take to “unlock” Smileloc with Smilekey?
Smilekey is preset to 8-seconds per site. With this in mind, most full arch all-on-x prostheses can be fully removed in less than a minute.
How long do I have to remove an arch before the Smileloc’s arms re-engage?
Once the Smileloc is in the unlocked position, it will remain in that configuration. Only if the arms are manually reset would it return to a locked configuration. How to reset the Smileloc using the Arm Setter and Pin

How is a Smileloc-retained prosthesis different from conventional screw/cement-retained prostheses?
The Smileloc Abutment System replaces the need for screw-retained or cement-retained dental prostheses thus removing the complications associated with conventional treatment methods. Smileloc delivery is easy, quick, and predictable. Additionally, the Smileloc can easily be retrieved with the Smilekey.
Is the Smileloc single or multiple use?
Per FDA requirements, Smilelocs are single use. The Smilelocs are tested for long-term use, are autoclavable, resettable, and designed to last for the lifetime of the prosthetic.
How long will Smileloc open and close?
Indefinitely. Smileloc passed FDA-required bench-top testing exerting load and fatigue for more than 5 million cycles without failure. RODO has observed cases more than 7 years old which exhibit no degradation.
At what temperature does the Smileloc unlock?
55°C (135°F). See the “Safety” section of the FAQ for more details.
Do the Smilelocs come ready to seat?
Yes, out of the package they are ready to engage the abutment.
Why are my Smilelocs different colors?
The silver Smilelocs are for intra-oral use only. Light blue Smilelocs are for lab use or intra-oral pick-up use only.
Can a patient feel the heat from the Smilekey?
Yes, but only if the Smilekey wand is activated more than twice back-to-back. See the “Safety” section of the FAQ for more details.
What do the lights on the Smilekey wand tell me?
Inside the lid of the Smilekey box are the light explanations.
How many Smilekey activations are available per charge?
Between 100 and 200 activations.
How long does the Smilekey wand stay charged?
On average, the Smilekey wand holds a charge for 30 days.
How long does the Smilekey wand take to charge?
3 hours.
What is the minimum charge to active a case?
30-minute charging session.
What type of charger is used to charge the Smilekey?
Smilekey comes with a charging ‘USB-C’ type and is not compatible with other ‘USB-C’ charges, such as cell phones.
How do I clean a Smilekey?
Use cold sterilization with CaviWipes or 70% alcohol wipes. Do not submerge in liquids. Add a plastic disposable sleeve to cover the wand tip if desired to add an additional barrier to protect the patient. The wand only activates metal, so there is no risk of melting plastic sleeves.
What torque value are RODO Abutments tightened to?
RODO abutments are tightened to the implant manufacturers’ recommendations. The torque values are noted on each product pouch. Note all RODO ancillary components should be hand tightened.
How long does the Smilekey wand take activate a Smileloc intra-orally or inside a prosthetic?
8 seconds, the amount of time the wand blinks blue.
How long does the Smilekey wand take activate a Smileloc alone on a model?
2-3 seconds.
What is the best position to direct the Smilekey when removing a full arch prosthetic?
Lingual is the best position, or the facial or lingual position that is closest to the implant position within the prosthetic. In the anterior, the lingual may be too narrow for the Smilekey to get close to the prosthetic, so activating the Smilekey on the labial will be more effective. Occlusal activation is also possible as a third option.
Tip: Ask the patient to swish with warm water to pre-warm the Smilelocs. Instruct the patient to bite down on cotton rolls or tongue depressors to help break the tension between the Smileloc arms and the MUA’s.
When activating a prosthetic, where should we position the head apically / occlusally?
Position the Smilekey perpendicular to the apical portion of the prosthetic, near the tissue. If the abutment position is visible from underneath the prosthetic, the doctor may aim the Smilekey accordingly. Some doctors also suggest making a dimple in the prosthetic facial to the abutment as target to aim the Smilekey during activation.
What order should the Smilelocs be activated to remove a full arch prosthetic?
Best practice is to start at one end and finish at the other end to ensure that every Smileloc has been activated.
Why do the short Smileloc Copings have a screw access hole on the occlusal side?
The hole must be blocked out when picking up the prosthetic to prevent the luting material from flowing into the coping.
When using the Arm Setter to reset the Smilelocs, how much pressure is needed?
Gently push the Smile Setter Pin into the Setter and feel the metal shifting. Excessive pressure can ruin the Smileloc. If the Smileloc arm is pushed too far out using angled Setter position, then the arm can be bent back.
Can I reset the Smilelocs extra-orally with steam?
Yes, Smilelocs are activated at 55 degrees Celsius / 131 degrees Fahrenheit and steam will aid with removal of the prosthetic from a model. The activated position is the Smilelocs engaged holding the coping to the abutment.
What implant systems are compatible with RODO Abutments?
BioHorizons, Neodent, NobelBiocare, Straumann, and Zimmer Biomet.
Will an implant warranty be voided when used with a RODO Abutment?
If the implant company refuses to honor their warranty for the implant (exclusively due to the use of the Products), and the Clinician both meets the “Eligibility” criteria, then RODO will reimburse the Clinician for the actual and verifiable purchase cost of a replacement implant. Reference RODO Warranty Terms and Conditions for full coverage details http://rodomedical.com/terms-and-conditions/.
What gingival heights and angles are available for RODO Abutments?
RODO abutments are available in industry standard gingival heights and 17° and 30° for multi-unit application.
Does RODO offer custom abutments?
Custom abutments are not necessary with the RODO abutment system. Instead, you customize the tooth that will connect to a stock abutment with the Smileloc. Since there is no residual cement clean-up required, a crown can be longer and placed more subgingivally. Therefore, the emergence profile is maintained for a more natural, esthetic result.
What type of restorative material can be used with the RODO Abutment System?
The RODO Abutment System is agnostic to restorative material. Smileloc-retained dental prostheses have been restored with e.max, zirconia, PEKKTON and TriLor to name a few.
What is the maximum recommended thickness for a Smileloc-retained prosthetic design?
To achieve proper Smileloc activation, 7mm from the center of the abutment to the outside of a prosthetic is the maximum recommended thickness.
What if my patient moves and the treating dentist is not knowledgeable about the RODO Abutment System?
RODO will loan any instruments and/or Smilekey required to the treating dentist. Additionally, RODO will provide training and support to the treating dentist.
Is Nitinol safe? What if my patient has nickel allergies?
Nitinol is used in various medical applications such as endodontic files and heart stents. Smileloc has been thoroughly studied and approved by the FDA to ensure patient safety. One study performed by RODO showed that a bare Smileloc leached less nickel than ingested as part of our daily diet.
Has anyone had any issues with tissue swelling during the conversion process and then being unable to seat the prosthesis?
It is critical to relieve the intaglio so that you can try in without the SmileLocs in place to verify a passive fit with minimal pressure required. Once you verify a passive fit, then you are in good shape to put the SmileLocs in place and know that you can seat with ample pressure. The Immediate seat of a RODO appliance will require more pressure than a screwed temporary because the screws provide the mechanical advantage and drive a non-passive temp through the swollen gums while the same does not apply to RODO.
Will Smileloc unlock if my patient consumes very hot liquid or food?
No. Direct heat needs to be applied to unlock Smileloc. In addition, Smileloc is insulated by the restorative dental material (crown/prosthesis) and coping.
Will this technology heat up the implant and abutments to a degree that there could be an issue?
No, Smilekey activation is directed through the center of the tip and its magnetic fields dissipate into air exponentially. The heat that is generated in Smileloc during activation for 8 seconds quickly dissipates and will not cause damage to the implant. RODO has studied the effects of heat generated from this technology and found that with normal used, maximum of 2 activations back-to-back, there are zero implications.
How long has the product been on the market?
Use of Smileloc began in 2013 as part of FDA clinical trial to obtain regulatory approval. The FDA approved Smileloc in late-2016, and Smilekey was approved in mid-2018.
What is the warranty on RODO components?
Except for Smilekey, all RODO products come with a lifetime warranty. RODO passed FDA-required bench-top testing exerting load and fatigue for more than 5 million cycles without failure. RODO has observed cases more than 7 years old which exhibit no degradation.
Smilekey refuses to turn on- what do I do?
The most common cause is that the tip and the handle of the Smilekey are not fully engaged with each other. Remove the tip of the Smilekey and ensure that it is aligned and reset. The tip requires some force to assemble with the base. If this does not reestablish power, contact RODO to return the wand for a replacement.
What if I can’t seat the prosthetic on the day of CHOME surgery using the Smilelocs?
If the prosthetic will not completely engage with the Smilelocs, the most common cause is an excess of tissue around the RODO abutments. The doctor may instruct the patient to bite on cotton rolls with the prosthetic in/out of the mouth to compress the tissue. The doctor may also concave the intaglio surface of the prosthetic to make space. If the prosthetic will not seat even after these measures, the doctor may choose to send the patient home in the RAPID appliance and wait a few days for the tissue to recover.
Can I use the Smilekey wand multiple times in a row on once site when the prosthetic is not coming loose?
Two attempts in a row are the maximum.
What if an implant fails attached to a RODO abutment?
RODO covers the cost of the implant associated with the failure. Reference RODO Warranty Terms and Conditions for full coverage details http://rodomedical.com/terms-and-conditions/.
